What does Proverbs 22:24 mean?

If you take advantage of the poor to get rich, or give gifts to the wealthy, you'll end up in poverty yourself. Proverbs 22:24 - Modern Text Bible

(Exploiting the vulnerable or trying to buy favor with the rich leads to ruin, not success.)

Don’t make friends with someone who’s quick to anger or easily loses their temper. The verse warns that anger is contagious — spending time with someone who explodes easily can shape your own reactions and attitudes. The Hebrew word for angry here is ’aph, which literally means “nose” or “face,” but came to mean anger because of the way anger shows up in someone’s face.

This goes against the idea that you can hang out with anyone and not be affected. The truth is, the people closest to you shape your habits and your outlook, often more than you realize. This verse isn’t about judging others, but about protecting yourself from becoming someone you don’t want to be.

If you’ve ever found yourself getting more irritable or reactive after being around certain people, this verse explains why. It’s a reminder to choose your close relationships carefully — not just for your own peace, but for the kind of person you’re becoming.
