What does Proverbs 14:17 mean?

Quick-tempered people do stupid things, but those who scheme are hated. Proverbs 14:17 - Modern Text Bible

(Losing your temper leads to mistakes, but being manipulative makes people despise you.)

People who lose their temper quickly make foolish choices and end up doing things they'll regret. The proverb claims that a hot temper leads to reckless behavior. The Hebrew word for "quick-tempered" is qatsar aph, literally "short of nose," which was an ancient way of describing someone who gets angry fast. The "schemer"—mezimmah—is someone who plots or acts with hidden motives, but even they eventually get disliked.

This challenges the idea that anger is strength or that acting on impulse is brave. In both ancient and modern life, people sometimes admire those who "don't take anything from anyone." But the verse says that uncontrolled anger leads to mistakes and damaged relationships.

If you've ever said or done something in anger and wished you could take it back, you know the truth here. The proverb is a call to slow down, breathe, and think before reacting. Managing your emotions isn't weakness—it's wisdom that protects you and those around you.
