What does Proverbs 22:23 mean?
Foolishness is bound up in a child's heart, but discipline will drive it out. Proverbs 22:23 - Modern Text Bible
(Children naturally act foolishly, but loving correction helps them grow wise.)
God himself takes up the case of the powerless and stands against those who exploit them. The verse says that if you take advantage of the vulnerable, you’re not just hurting them — you’re picking a fight with God. The Hebrew word for "plead their cause" is riv, which means to argue, defend, or even prosecute in court.
This is a radical idea, both then and now. In most societies, the poor are ignored or left to fend for themselves. Here, the claim is that God isn’t neutral — he actively takes the side of those who can’t defend themselves. That’s a direct challenge to anyone who thinks they can get away with injustice just because no one is watching.
If you’ve ever felt invisible or powerless, this verse says you’re not forgotten. And if you’re in a position of strength, it’s a warning: what you do to others matters, even if you think no one will notice. Justice isn’t just a human concern — it’s something bigger, and everyone is accountable.
