What does Proverbs 29:13 mean?

Rich and poor have this in common: God made them both, and He gives them the ability to see. Proverbs 29:13 - Modern Text Bible

(Everyone, regardless of status, is created and sustained by God.)

The powerful and the powerless both owe their existence to the same source. The verse claims that whether you’re rich or poor, you share the same "light"—the Hebrew word or, meaning not just physical sight, but also life and awareness. It’s a way of saying that all people, regardless of status, are fundamentally equal in what matters most.

This pushes back on the ancient and modern belief that wealth makes someone more important or more favored by fate or God. Instead, it levels the playing field: everyone is alive by the same gift, no matter their bank account.

If you’ve ever felt invisible because you don’t have much, or superior because you do, this verse is a reset. It’s a reminder that dignity and value aren’t tied to money. Every person you meet is living on the same breath, with the same basic needs and hopes. It’s a call to see others—and yourself—as equally human.
