What does Proverbs 29:12 mean?

If a ruler listens to lies, everyone who works for them will end up being dishonest too. Proverbs 29:12 - Modern Text Bible

(Corrupt leadership breeds a corrupt culture.)

When a leader is open to lies or flattery, the people around them quickly learn to play along—and dishonesty becomes the norm. The Hebrew word for "lies" is sheqer, meaning falsehood or deception, not just a harmless fib. This verse claims that the tone set at the top shapes the whole environment.

This challenges the idea that a little dishonesty from those in charge is harmless. Instead, it warns that corruption at the top infects everyone below. It’s a warning to anyone with influence: what you tolerate, you multiply.

If you’ve ever worked somewhere where bending the truth was expected, you know how fast that culture spreads. This verse is a call to anyone in charge—at work, at home, in a group—to pay attention to what you allow. Your example matters, and your honesty (or lack of it) shapes the world around you.
