What does Proverbs 14:29 mean?
If you’re patient, you show real understanding. If you’re quick to get angry, you just show your foolishness. Proverbs 14:29 - Modern Text Bible
(Patience is a sign of wisdom, while a short temper reveals a lack of self-control.)
Someone who stays calm and patient shows real understanding, but a person who quickly gets angry reveals their ignorance. The Hebrew word for "patient" is erek apayim, literally "long of nose," a phrase meaning slow to anger or slow to react. The "exalts folly" part uses rum ivveleth, meaning to lift up or make a big deal of foolishness—when you lose your temper, you’re putting your own lack of control on display.
This proverb pushes against the idea that anger is a sign of strength or authenticity. Instead, it says that controlling your reactions is a sign of maturity and deep understanding. Losing your temper doesn’t make you powerful; it makes you vulnerable and exposed.
If you struggle with frustration or snapping at others, this verse offers a different path. Patience isn’t weakness—it’s a quiet strength that helps you see situations clearly and respond in ways you won’t regret later.
