What does Proverbs 14:28 mean?

A leader’s strength comes from having many people, but if people leave, that’s a sign of a leader’s downfall. Proverbs 14:28 - Modern Text Bible

(A ruler’s success depends on the well-being and loyalty of their people; losing them means losing influence.)

The size and well-being of a group is what makes a leader strong, but when people abandon a leader, their influence shrinks. The Hebrew word for "prince" or "leader" is melech, which can mean king or anyone in authority. The "glory" (tip'eret) is the honor or reputation that comes from serving others well. When people leave or are driven away, it’s a sign that leadership has failed, and what remains is just emptiness.

This verse challenges the idea that leadership is about power, titles, or being in control. Instead, it says that real leadership is about the people who choose to follow and trust you. When leaders care for their people, everyone flourishes; when they don’t, their influence fades.

If you’re in any position of influence—at work, in your family, or among friends—this verse is a reminder that your strength comes from the trust and well-being of those around you. Leadership is measured by the lives you impact, not just the position you hold.
