What does Proverbs 14:30 mean?
A peaceful heart keeps you healthy, but jealousy will eat you up from the inside. Proverbs 14:30 - Modern Text Bible
(Inner calm brings well-being, but envy is destructive and draining.)
Having a calm, peaceful heart leads to a healthy life, but jealousy eats away at you from the inside. The Hebrew word for "peaceful" is marpe, meaning healing or soothing. "Envy" is qin'ah, which is more than just wanting what others have—it’s a bitter, restless feeling that never lets you be satisfied. The "bones" are a symbol of your deepest self; when envy takes over, it’s like a disease that drains your energy and joy.
This verse goes against the idea that your feelings don’t affect your health or that jealousy is harmless. It says that what’s going on inside you—whether peace or envy—shows up in your body and your life.
If you find yourself comparing your life to others and feeling resentful, this verse is a reminder that peace comes from letting go of jealousy. Focusing on what you have, and finding contentment, is the healthiest thing you can do for yourself.
