What does Proverbs 11:20 mean?
People who twist things and act crookedly are disgusting to God. But if you’re honest and straightforward, he’s happy with you. Proverbs 11:20 - Modern Text Bible
(God values honesty and integrity, but he rejects those who are deceitful or manipulative.)
People with twisted motives are detestable to God, but those who live with honesty and integrity are his delight. The Hebrew word for "perverse" is ʿiqqēš, which means crooked, distorted, or bent out of shape, especially in the heart or mind. "Blameless" is tāmîm, meaning whole, complete, or sincere.
This verse pushes back on the idea that appearances or cleverness are what matter most. In a world that often rewards image and manipulation, it claims that what’s inside—your intentions and the direction of your heart—matters more than anything else.
If you’ve ever felt pressure to fake it or hide your real self, this proverb offers a different standard. Integrity isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being real and straight with yourself and others, even when no one’s watching.
