What does Proverbs 21:2 mean?

Everyone thinks their own way is right, but the Lord sees what’s really going on inside. Proverbs 21:2 - Modern Text Bible

(We tend to justify ourselves, but God looks past our excuses and sees our true motives.)

People are convinced their own choices are justified, but there’s a deeper standard that sees through appearances. The Hebrew word for "right" here is yashar (יָשָׁר), meaning straight or upright—what lines up with what’s truly good. The proverb insists that while everyone can rationalize their actions, there’s a perspective that cuts through self-deception and excuses.

This pushes back against the modern mantra of "follow your heart" or "trust your truth." The proverb warns that self-justification is easy, but it doesn’t guarantee we’re actually doing what’s good or fair. Our motives are often mixed or hidden, even from ourselves.

If you’ve ever looked back on a decision and realized you were fooling yourself, you know what this verse is talking about. It’s a call to humility—to admit that our own perspective is limited, and to seek wisdom that goes beyond what just feels right in the moment. It’s an invitation to question our assumptions and be open to correction, knowing that honesty about our motives is the first step toward real integrity.
