What does 2 Samuel 18:22 mean?

Ahimaaz spoke up again, 'No matter what, let me run after the Cushite.' Joab said, 'Why do you want to do this, my son? You won't get any reward for it.' 2 Samuel 18:22 - Modern Text Bible

(Ahimaaz insists on running, even though Joab warns him there's nothing to gain and the news is hard.)

Ahimaaz pleads with Joab to let him run to the king, even though he’s been told he won’t bring a reward or good news. The Hebrew verb rutz (רוּץ), meaning “to run,” is repeated, emphasizing Ahimaaz’s eagerness and determination. He wants to go, not for gain, but for some deeper reason—maybe loyalty, maybe a need to be involved.

This is counter to the idea that people only act when there’s something in it for them. Ahimaaz knows he won’t get credit or a reward, but he still wants to run. Sometimes, people are driven by duty, love, or the simple need to do something, even when it won’t benefit them.

If you’ve ever insisted on helping or showing up, even when told it won’t change things or earn you recognition, you’ll understand Ahimaaz. Sometimes, just being present or involved matters more than the outcome.
