What does 2 Samuel 18:20 mean?

But Joab told him, 'You're not the one to bring the news today. You can do it another time, but not today, because the king's son is dead.' 2 Samuel 18:20 - Modern Text Bible

(Joab knows the news is complicated—it's not just victory, but also the death of David's son. He doesn't want Ahimaaz to be the bearer of such painful news.)

Joab tells Ahimaaz that he isn't the right person to bring news about Absalom’s death to King David. Not everyone is chosen to deliver painful truths, especially when the message could break someone’s heart. The Hebrew word besorah (בְּשׂוֹרָה), meaning “news” or “good tidings,” is used here. But in this context, the news isn’t good—it’s devastating. This flips the expectation that messengers always bring joy or victory.

Joab’s decision is counter-cultural. In ancient times, messengers often gained honor by bringing news, but Joab recognizes that some news is too heavy for certain people to carry. He protects Ahimaaz from being the bearer of sorrow, knowing the emotional cost.

There are moments in life when you want to help or be involved, but sometimes you’re spared from a role because it would hurt you or others more than you realize. This verse is a reminder that being kept from something isn’t always rejection—it can be compassion.
