What does 2 Samuel 18:21 mean?

Then Joab said to a Cushite, 'Go tell the king what you've seen.' The Cushite bowed and ran off. 2 Samuel 18:21 - Modern Text Bible

(Joab sends someone else, likely a foreigner, to deliver the difficult message to David.)

Joab chooses a Cushite, a foreigner, to deliver the news of Absalom’s death to King David. This decision shows that sometimes outsiders are chosen for difficult tasks because they have less personal connection to the pain involved. The word kushi (כּוּשִׁי) is used for the Cushite, marking him as someone from outside Israel’s inner circle.

It’s surprising that Joab doesn’t pick a close ally or family member for this role. Instead, he picks someone who won’t feel the emotional weight as deeply. This pushes against the idea that only insiders handle the hardest jobs—sometimes it’s the opposite.

In real life, there are times when you’re asked to step in because you have enough distance to be clear-headed. Or, you might see others chosen for tough roles not because they’re less important, but because they’re less entangled. This verse is about the wisdom of knowing who should carry which burdens.
