What does 1 John 3:6 mean?
No one who stays connected to him keeps on sinning. If someone keeps sinning, it means they haven’t really seen him or understood who he is. 1 John 3:6 - Modern Text Bible
(A real relationship with Jesus changes a person’s behavior; ongoing sin shows a lack of true connection.)
Anyone who stays connected to God doesn’t keep on sinning. The Greek word for "keeps on sinning" is hamartanei, a form that means ongoing, habitual action—not just a one-time mistake. The verse claims that a real relationship with God changes your trajectory; you can’t keep going the same way if you’re really connected.
This cuts against the grain of thinking that beliefs and actions are separate, or that you can know God and nothing in your life has to change. It’s a challenge to easy self-justification and empty talk.
If you’re wrestling with the gap between what you say you believe and how you actually live, this verse invites you to look at the connection. Real change isn’t about perfection, but about direction—if you’re moving toward what’s good, it shows up in your choices over time.
