What does 1 John 3:5 mean?

You know that Jesus came to take away our sins, and there’s nothing sinful in him at all. 1 John 3:5 - Modern Text Bible

(Jesus’ purpose was to remove sin, and he himself is completely free from it.)

Jesus showed up to remove sin, and He Himself never sinned. The Greek word for "take away" is airō, meaning to lift up or carry off—like removing a burden. Saying He had "no sin" uses the word hamartia again, emphasizing absolute innocence, not just good intentions or a clean record.

This pushes back against the idea that everyone’s flawed or that no one can really help anyone else. The claim here is that someone existed who wasn’t weighed down by the same things that drag the rest of us down, and that He actually did something to remove the weight of guilt and failure from others.

If you’ve ever felt stuck by your past or wondered if change is possible, this verse suggests that you don’t have to carry everything alone. Someone else has already dealt with the things you can’t fix yourself, and that opens the door to a different kind of freedom.
