What does Proverbs 8:24 mean?

Before the oceans appeared, before there were springs pouring out water, I was already here. Proverbs 8:24 - Modern Text Bible

(Wisdom was present before the formation of the earth’s waters, emphasizing her priority.)

Wisdom says she was present before the oceans were formed, before the deep waters and springs ever existed. The Hebrew word for "depths" is tehom, which refers to the primeval deep, the chaotic waters at the start of creation. This is the same word used in Genesis to describe the formless void before the world took shape.

This runs counter to the idea that wisdom is something that emerges from chaos or disorder. Instead, wisdom is there before the chaos, before even the most basic elements of the earth. In ancient cultures, water often symbolized mystery and danger, but here, wisdom predates even those fears.

If you ever feel like your life is swirling in confusion or uncertainty, this verse offers a different perspective. Wisdom isn't something you find only after the chaos settles—it's available even before things make sense. When everything feels uncertain, wisdom is already present, waiting to guide you through.
