What does Proverbs 26:12 mean?

If someone thinks they're wise but isn't, that's worse than being a fool. Proverbs 26:12 - Modern Text Bible

(Being convinced you're right when you're not is more dangerous than just being ignorant.)

Believing you’re always right is more dangerous than being a fool. This proverb says there’s more hope for someone who’s obviously foolish than for a person convinced of their own wisdom. The Hebrew for "wise in his own eyes" (chakam be’enav) describes someone who’s self-assured and closed off to learning. The surprising angle is that self-deception is harder to fix than ignorance. In a culture that prizes confidence and self-assurance, this verse says humility is actually safer.

If you’ve ever met someone who can’t admit they’re wrong, you know how hard it is to help them. This proverb encourages you to stay open to feedback and keep questioning your own assumptions. Real wisdom starts with knowing you don’t know everything.
