What does Proverbs 22:13 mean?
If you love pleasure, you'll end up poor; if you love wine and luxury, you won't get rich. Proverbs 22:13 - Modern Text Bible
(Chasing after pleasure and luxury leads to poverty, not prosperity.)
Excuses can be so extreme they’re almost comical. The lazy person claims there’s a lion outside, using wild fears to justify staying in and doing nothing. The Hebrew word for "lazy" is atsel, someone who avoids effort or responsibility. In ancient times, lions were rare in cities—so this excuse was obviously exaggerated. The verse highlights how people can invent dramatic reasons to avoid what they don’t want to do.
This challenges the idea that every excuse deserves sympathy. Sometimes, the real issue isn’t danger but fear of effort, risk, or change. If you find yourself putting off important steps in life—work, relationships, or even small tasks—ask whether your reasons are real or just creative ways to avoid discomfort. Facing reality, even when it’s hard, is the first step to moving forward. Don’t let imaginary lions keep you stuck.
