What does Proverbs 21:27 mean?

The sacrifices of the wicked are disgusting to the Lord, especially when they’re offered with evil motives. Proverbs 21:27 - Modern Text Bible

(Religious acts mean nothing to God if your heart and actions are corrupt.)

Doing something that looks good on the outside—like making a sacrifice—doesn’t mean much if your motives are wrong. The Hebrew word for "sacrifice" is zevach, a ritual act meant to show devotion. But if it’s just for show, or to cover up something bad, it’s actually offensive, not pleasing.

This proverb challenges the idea that actions alone matter. In both ancient and modern times, people have tried to balance out bad behavior with a public good deed. But this verse says that empty rituals or gestures, especially when done with hidden motives, are worse than doing nothing at all.

If you’ve ever tried to make up for a mistake by just going through the motions, this is a reminder: real change starts inside. Doing the right thing for the wrong reason doesn’t fool anyone, and it won’t bring peace.
