What does Proverbs 21:26 mean?

All day long they crave and want, but the righteous give freely and don’t hold back. Proverbs 21:26 - Modern Text Bible

(Selfish people are never satisfied, but good people are generous and content.)

Some people never stop wanting—they crave more all day long. But those who are generous find a different kind of fulfillment. The Hebrew word for "gives" here is natan, meaning to give freely, without expecting anything back. It’s a sharp contrast: endless wanting versus open-handed giving.

This proverb goes against the idea that happiness comes from getting more. In reality, the more you focus on what you don’t have, the less satisfied you feel. Generosity, on the other hand, breaks the cycle of craving and brings a sense of enough.

If you’re caught in a loop of always needing the next thing, this verse suggests trying something different: give, even a little, to someone else. You might find that satisfaction comes not from having more, but from sharing what you already have.
