What does Proverbs 20:15 mean?

Gold and jewels are valuable, but wise words are worth even more. Proverbs 20:15 - Modern Text Bible

(Material wealth is good, but good advice or insight is even more precious.)

No matter how much gold or how many jewels you own, truly wise words are even more precious. The Hebrew word for lips here is saphah, meaning speech or language, and for knowledge is da’at, which implies insight or understanding. This verse challenges the belief that wealth is the ultimate goal or that luxury brings the most value to life. Instead, it claims that what you say—and the wisdom behind it—can outshine any material possession. If you’ve ever chased after things, thinking they’d satisfy you, this verse offers a different standard: the right word at the right moment, spoken with insight, can change a life or a situation in ways money never could. It’s a call to seek out and value wisdom, in yourself and in others, above all else.
