What does Proverbs 17:19 mean?
If you love fighting, you’re asking for trouble. If you brag about your big plans, you’re setting yourself up for a fall. Proverbs 17:19 - Modern Text Bible
(This verse connects a love of conflict and arrogance with self-destruction. Picking fights and showing off both lead to problems.)
If you love picking fights or showing off, you’re setting yourself up for disaster. The Hebrew word for "transgression" is pesha, which means open rebellion or crossing a line on purpose. Building a "high gate" is a metaphor for pride—trying to impress or stand above others. This proverb says both attitudes lead to ruin.
This challenges the idea that being confrontational or flashy is a strength. In reality, always needing to win or be seen usually ends up isolating you and causing problems you can’t control.
If you find yourself drawn to drama or always needing to be right, this proverb suggests stepping back. Real strength is found in humility and peace, not in constant conflict or self-promotion. The cost of pride and argument is usually higher than you think.
