What does Proverbs 17:18 mean?

It’s foolish to promise to pay someone else’s debt, especially for a stranger. Proverbs 17:18 - Modern Text Bible

(This warns against making risky financial commitments for people you don’t really know. It’s about not letting yourself get trapped by someone else’s problems.)

Agreeing to guarantee someone else’s debt without thinking is a recipe for trouble. The Hebrew word for "strikes hands" is taqa, which means to pledge or shake hands on a deal—an ancient way of sealing a promise. This proverb warns that making these commitments "in the presence of a neighbor"—publicly and impulsively—shows a lack of sense.

It’s counter-cultural because many people think helping friends financially is always good. But this verse says there’s a difference between generosity and foolish risk. Putting your own future on the line for someone else’s choices can backfire badly.

If you’re ever asked to co-sign a loan or make a big promise for someone, pause before you say yes. Helping is good, but wisdom means knowing your limits. Sometimes, saying no is the best way to protect both yourself and your relationships.
