What does Philippians 1:9 mean?

Here’s what I keep praying: that your love keeps growing, getting smarter and more insightful all the time. Philippians 1:9 - Modern Text Bible

(He wants their love to mature, not just in feeling but in wisdom and understanding.)

Love isn't just about feeling more—it's about loving better, with real understanding and depth. Paul asks for love to keep growing, but not in a vague or sentimental way. He wants love to overflow with knowledge (Greek: epignosis, meaning deep, experiential understanding) and insight (Greek: aisthesis, meaning moral perception or discernment). This is love that learns, questions, and seeks to do what's truly good for others, not just what's easy or feels nice.

This pushes back against the idea that love is just about being nice or accepting everything. In both ancient and modern times, people often settle for shallow kindness or avoid tough conversations in the name of love. Paul’s vision is sharper: real love is smart, thoughtful, and sometimes challenging.

For someone navigating relationships, this verse suggests that caring for others means listening, learning, and sometimes making hard choices. It means asking what will actually help someone grow, not just what keeps things comfortable. Love, in this sense, is a skill to practice and deepen, not just a feeling to chase.
