What does Philippians 1:6 mean?

I’m totally confident that the one who started this good work in you will keep at it and finish it by the time Jesus comes back. Philippians 1:6 - Modern Text Bible

(Paul reassures them that God is the one driving their growth and won’t give up on them.)

Paul is convinced that the good work started in the Philippians will be carried through to completion. The Greek word epiteleō (ἐπιτελέω) means to finish or bring something to its intended goal. Paul’s confidence isn’t in people’s ability to keep it together, but in the idea that what’s been started with purpose won’t be abandoned halfway.

This verse pushes back against the fear that beginnings don’t matter or that things will fall apart before they’re finished. It suggests that what is started with meaning and intention has a future, even if the process is slow or messy. For anyone who’s ever worried about failing, quitting, or being left unfinished, this verse offers hope: the story isn’t over, and the work in your life is still unfolding.
