What does Ephesians 1:5 mean?

He decided ahead of time to bring us into his family through Jesus, because that’s what he wanted and it made him happy. Ephesians 1:5 - Modern Text Bible

(God’s choice to adopt believers as his children was intentional and joyful.)

God made a deliberate choice to bring people into his family, not as outsiders but as adopted children. This wasn't a last-minute decision—it's described as something planned "in advance," showing intention and care. The Greek word for adoption here is huiothesia, which means being placed as a full son or daughter, not just taken in as a guest. In the ancient world, adoption gave someone all the rights and privileges of a natural-born child. This verse pushes back against the idea that anyone is too far gone or unworthy to belong. It also challenges the belief that belonging is something you have to earn or prove. Instead, it says you are wanted and chosen, not by accident but by design. For someone who has ever felt left out, unwanted, or unsure of their place in the world, this verse offers a radically different perspective: you can be fully accepted, not because of what you do, but because of who decided to love you first.
