What does 2 Samuel 5:9 mean?

David moved into the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the area around it, starting from the terraces inward. 2 Samuel 5:9 - Modern Text Bible

(David establishes his new capital and begins to expand and fortify it.)

David settles in the stronghold and calls it the City of David. He starts building all around, expanding from the central fortress outward. The Hebrew word for "built" is banah (בָּנָה), which means to construct, establish, or rebuild. David isn't just moving in; he's shaping the city's future, turning a conquered place into a center for his people.

This verse challenges the idea that a place or situation is defined only by its past. Jerusalem was once a symbol of resistance and exclusion, but David transforms it into a place of belonging and growth. Building is more than physical construction—it's about creating a new identity and purpose.

If you've ever felt like your past defines you, or that a place can't be more than what it was, this verse suggests otherwise. Change is possible, and sometimes the most meaningful new beginnings happen right where something old has ended.
