What does 2 Samuel 24:22 mean?

Araunah said, 'Take it, my king, and offer whatever you want. Here are oxen for the sacrifice, and you can use the threshing sledges and yokes for firewood.' 2 Samuel 24:22 - Modern Text Bible

(Araunah generously offers everything David needs, showing respect and support for the king’s mission.)

Araunah responds to David’s request by offering not just the land, but also oxen and tools for the sacrifice—everything needed, free of charge. The Hebrew word for give here is natan (נָתַן), which means to offer or bestow. Araunah’s generosity is immediate and complete, without hesitation or calculation.

This is counter-cultural because it goes beyond what’s expected. In times of crisis, people often hold back, protect their resources, or ask, “What’s in it for me?” Araunah does the opposite, making it as easy as possible for David to do the right thing, even though it costs him personally.

If you’ve ever wondered how to help someone who’s trying to fix a mistake, Araunah’s example is powerful. Sometimes, the most meaningful thing you can do is to offer what you have, no strings attached. Generosity—especially when it’s not required—can be the difference between someone staying stuck and moving forward.
