What does 2 Samuel 24:21 mean?

Araunah asked, 'Why has my lord the king come to see me?' David answered, 'I need to buy your threshing floor to build an altar to the Lord, so the plague will stop.' 2 Samuel 24:21 - Modern Text Bible

(David explains his purpose: he wants to buy the land to make a sacrifice and end the disaster.)

Araunah asks David why he’s come to his property, and David answers honestly: he’s there to buy the land and build an altar to stop the disaster affecting the people. The Hebrew word for buy is qanah (קָנָה), which means to acquire or purchase. David doesn’t assume he can take what he wants as king; he insists on paying for it.

This is counter to both ancient and modern ideas of power. Leaders often expect special treatment or freebies, but David refuses to use his position for personal gain. He’s determined that the cost of making things right should come from him, not from someone else’s generosity or obligation.

If you’ve ever been tempted to cut corners or accept favors because of who you are, this verse challenges that instinct. Real change, especially after a mistake, usually costs something. Owning the cost—financial, emotional, or otherwise—shows integrity and respect for others. When you’re trying to fix something, make sure you’re not expecting someone else to pay your price.
