What does 2 Samuel 20:13 mean?

Once Amasa’s body was out of the way, everyone followed Joab to chase Sheba, son of Bichri. 2 Samuel 20:13 - Modern Text Bible

(With the distraction gone, the troops fall in behind Joab and continue the pursuit.)

Once Amasa’s body was taken off the road, everyone who had stopped moved on and followed Joab to chase Sheba. The Hebrew word for “followed” is halak, meaning to walk or proceed. The army’s momentum was restored only after the obstacle was dealt with, showing how action resumes once the most immediate pain is addressed.

This verse pushes back on the idea that people can just ignore trauma and keep going. Instead, it shows that progress often requires confronting and removing what’s blocking the way—even if it’s uncomfortable or painful. Only then can people refocus on the task ahead.

In life, moving forward after loss, betrayal, or crisis isn’t about pretending nothing happened. It’s about facing it, making hard decisions, and then choosing to keep going. Healing starts with acknowledging what’s in the way and then taking the next step, even if it’s just one foot after another.
