What does 2 Samuel 13:6 mean?

Jonadab noticed Amnon looking miserable and asked, 'Why do you look so down every morning, prince? Tell me what's going on.' 2 Samuel 13:6 - Modern Text Bible

(Jonadab sees that Amnon is troubled and presses him to open up about it.)

Amnon lies in bed, pretending to be sick, and when his father David visits, he asks for Tamar to come and make food for him. The act is calculated—Amnon uses his illness as a cover to get what he wants. The Hebrew verb for "pretend" is chalah, echoing his earlier lovesick state, but now it’s fully a performance.

This verse pushes against the assumption that family ties are always safe or trustworthy. Here, trust is twisted into a tool for manipulation. The Bible doesn’t shy away from showing how even those closest to us can use our care and concern for their own ends.

If you’ve ever felt manipulated by someone you cared about, or wondered why people sometimes use illness or vulnerability as leverage, this verse offers a sobering look. It’s a call to be wise about trust, and to recognize when compassion is being used as a trap rather than an invitation to help.
