What does 1 John 3:8 mean?
If someone keeps on sinning, they belong to the devil, because the devil’s been sinning from the start. The reason God’s Son showed up was to destroy what the devil’s been doing. 1 John 3:8 - Modern Text Bible
(Persistent sin shows allegiance to evil, but Jesus came to break that pattern and undo the devil’s work.)
Living in ongoing sin is described as aligning with the devil, whose pattern is to oppose what’s good from the very start. The Greek word for "destroy" is luō, which means to break apart or dissolve—undoing what’s been tied up or tangled. Jesus’s purpose is described as breaking the cycle of harm and deception that’s been running since the beginning.
This is a direct challenge to the idea that evil is just a social construct or a minor flaw. The verse claims that there’s a real force behind what’s broken in the world, and that breaking free from that isn’t just about self-improvement but about a deeper intervention.
If you feel like you’re stuck in patterns that hurt you or others, this verse says you’re not powerless. The things that trap and damage people aren’t invincible—there’s hope for real change, even against the oldest and hardest problems.
