What does Revelation 3:1 mean?
Write this to the messenger of the church in Sardis: The One who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars says, I know what you’ve been doing. People think you’re alive, but really, you’re dead inside. Revelation 3:1 - Modern Text Bible
(Jesus is speaking to the church in Sardis, calling out their reputation for being spiritually alive, but exposing their true spiritual deadness.)
Jesus addresses the church in Sardis, saying they have a reputation for being alive but are actually dead inside. The Greek word for reputation is onoma, which literally means “name” or “fame.” This is about the difference between how things look on the outside and what’s really going on beneath the surface.
This verse pushes back against the idea that image is everything, or that looking successful means you actually are. It’s a warning that it’s possible to have all the right appearances—activity, respect, even spiritual language—while lacking real substance or life.
If you’ve ever felt pressure to keep up appearances, or worried that people only see the version of you that you project, this verse cuts through the noise. It’s a call to honesty with yourself: Are you alive inside, or just going through the motions? Real change starts with facing that question, no matter what anyone else thinks.
