What does Revelation 13:4 mean?

People worshiped the dragon for giving the beast its power, and they worshiped the beast, saying, 'Who is like the beast? Who can fight it?' Revelation 13:4 - Modern Text Bible

(People are in awe of the beast's power and see it as unbeatable, giving their loyalty to evil.)

People are amazed by the beast’s survival and give their allegiance, asking who could possibly stand against it. The Greek word for worship here is proskyneō, which means to bow down or show deep respect, often out of fear or awe. The dragon, source of the beast’s power, is also honored. This isn’t just about religion—it’s about how people can be drawn to power that seems invincible, even if it’s destructive.

This verse challenges the idea that people always choose what’s right. Sometimes, the sheer force of survival and strength is enough to win loyalty, even when it’s harmful. The ancient world saw this in the cult of emperors; today, it’s visible in celebrity culture, politics, and anywhere people rally behind power for its own sake.

If you’ve ever felt pressured to go along with something just because it seems unstoppable, this verse gets it. It asks hard questions about where your loyalty goes when you feel powerless. The challenge is to recognize when admiration is really just fear, and to think carefully about what you give your respect to—especially when it’s something that demands it by force.
