What does Revelation 13:17 mean?

No one could buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the beast's name or the number of its name. Revelation 13:17 - Modern Text Bible

(Without the mark, people are cut off from society and can't participate in daily life.)

Only people with the mark, the beast’s name, or its number are allowed to buy or sell—everyone else is shut out of the economy. The Greek word for "buy" here is agorazo, which means to purchase in a marketplace. The verse isn’t just about shopping; it’s about survival and being allowed to participate in society at all.

This challenges the idea that money or access is neutral or fair. Instead, it shows how systems of power can use economic pressure to force people to conform. It’s a stark warning: when identity and belief are tied to whether you can feed yourself or your family, the stakes become deeply personal.

If you’ve ever felt excluded or powerless because of something you couldn’t control, this verse names that experience. It asks you to think about what you’d do if your values put you at odds with what’s required to get by. The real question is, what’s worth more—your integrity, or your place in the system?
