What does Proverbs 7:14 mean?

I just finished offering my sacrifices, and today I paid my vows, so now I’ve got food from the altar at home. Proverbs 7:14 - Modern Text Bible

(The woman is saying she’s just done her religious duties, hinting that she’s respectable and has plenty to share. She’s using this as a way to make herself seem trustworthy and inviting.)

The woman tells the young man she’s made fellowship offerings and has fulfilled her vows. The Hebrew word for "fellowship offerings" is zevach sh'lamim, meaning sacrifices meant for peace or shared meals. She uses religious language to suggest she’s done something good or pure, possibly to make her actions seem less risky or more acceptable.

This verse challenges the idea that religious rituals automatically make someone trustworthy. In both ancient and modern times, people sometimes use spiritual language to cover up questionable motives. The proverb warns that just because someone talks about faith or good deeds doesn’t mean their intentions are pure.

If you’ve ever felt reassured by someone’s spiritual talk, this verse invites you to look deeper. Are they using religion as a mask, or do their actions match their words? Wisdom means not taking everything at face value, especially when someone’s trying to win your trust.
