What does Proverbs 6:31 mean?
But even then, if they’re caught, they have to pay back way more than they took—sometimes everything they own. Proverbs 6:31 - Modern Text Bible
(Even understandable wrongdoing still has consequences and costs.)
Even when someone steals because they’re hungry, they’re still expected to make it right—sometimes paying back much more than they took. This verse claims that actions have consequences, and even desperate choices bring responsibility. The Hebrew phrase shiva’atayim (sevenfold) means a lot, not always literally seven times, but the idea is full restitution, even if it costs everything.
This challenges the idea that good intentions erase the need to fix what’s been broken. It insists that making amends matters, no matter why the wrong happened.
If you’ve ever tried to justify a mistake because you had a reason, this verse is a reminder: responsibility and repair are part of real life. Owning your actions—even when you’re hurting—shows strength, not weakness.
