What does Proverbs 6:16 mean?
There are six things the Lord hates—actually, seven that really disgust him: Proverbs 6:16 - Modern Text Bible
(This introduces a list of behaviors that are especially offensive to God.)
There are certain behaviors that are deeply offensive—not just to people, but to God. The verse says there are six things that are hated, even seven that are detestable. The Hebrew word for "hates" is sane, which means to be utterly opposed to or to reject completely. This isn't about minor annoyances; it's about actions and attitudes that destroy trust, community, and dignity.
Our culture often treats all mistakes as equal or suggests that nothing is truly wrong if it doesn't hurt someone directly. But this verse draws a line: some things are so toxic that they tear at the fabric of society. The list that follows (in the next verses) isn't random—it's a collection of attitudes and actions that break relationships and foster injustice.
Even if you aren't sure what you believe about God, the idea that some actions are universally harmful rings true. We all know what it's like to see arrogance, dishonesty, or betrayal ruin something good. This verse invites you to think about what you truly value, and to consider if your actions line up with those values. It's a challenge to reject what destroys and to choose what builds up, even when it's not easy.
