What does Proverbs 31:4 mean?

Lemuel, it’s not right for kings to get drunk or for rulers to crave alcohol. Proverbs 31:4 - Modern Text Bible

(She cautions that leaders shouldn’t be controlled by alcohol, since it clouds judgment and isn’t fitting for someone with responsibility.)

Kings and rulers are told that drinking wine and strong alcohol isn’t for them. The Hebrew word for strong drink is shekar, meaning any intoxicating beverage. The point isn’t that alcohol is evil, but that those with responsibility need to stay sharp. Leadership demands clear thinking and self-control, not clouded judgment or dulled senses.

This goes against the stereotype that power entitles you to every pleasure. In ancient times, as now, leaders often felt above the rules. But this advice flips that: the more responsibility you have, the more you need to protect your ability to make wise decisions.

If you ever find yourself in a position where your choices affect others—at work, in your family, or among friends—this verse is a reminder to stay clear-headed. Sometimes, the best way to care for others is to set limits for yourself, even when you don’t have to.
