What does Proverbs 31:13 mean?
She looks for wool and flax and works with her hands, making things with skill and care. Proverbs 31:13 - Modern Text Bible
(She’s hardworking and resourceful, using her abilities to provide for her family.)
She looks for what needs to be done and works with her hands, willingly and skillfully. The Hebrew phrase for "works willingly" is chephetz (חֵפֶץ), meaning delight or desire—she doesn’t just do chores, she takes real pleasure in her work. She seeks out wool and flax, materials for making clothes, showing initiative and creativity.
This runs against the stereotype that work—especially domestic work—is drudgery or beneath someone’s dignity. Instead, it’s portrayed as meaningful and even joyful. She isn’t forced; she chooses to create, to provide, to make something valuable for her family and community.
For anyone who feels their daily work is overlooked or unimportant, this verse offers a different perspective. The things you make, fix, or care for matter. Taking pride in your work—whether it’s at home, on the job, or in a creative project—can be a source of real satisfaction and dignity, no matter who notices.
