What does Proverbs 30:8 mean?
Keep lies and dishonesty far away from me. Don’t let me be rich or poor—just give me what I need each day. Proverbs 30:8 - Modern Text Bible
(He asks God to keep him honest and to give him just enough, not too much or too little, so he can live well.)
Honesty and a balanced life matter more than riches or poverty. The verse asks to be kept away from lies and from having too much or too little. The Hebrew for "poverty" is resh, meaning lack or need, and "riches" is osher, meaning abundance. The writer doesn’t want either extreme—he wants daily bread, just enough to live. This is a countercultural request in any age, but especially now, when so much is about getting ahead or avoiding falling behind. The verse challenges the idea that happiness is found in having more, or that struggle is always noble. Instead, it’s about enough. If you’ve ever worried about money, or felt like your life is defined by what you have or don’t have, this verse offers a different way. It’s about finding contentment in sufficiency, and honesty in daily life. That’s a rare kind of peace, and it’s something anyone can ask for, no matter what they believe.
