What does Proverbs 30:16 mean?

The grave, a woman who can’t have children, dry land that always wants more water, and fire that never stops burning. Proverbs 30:16 - Modern Text Bible

(These four things are used as examples of endless hunger or desire.)

Some things in life just keep wanting more. This verse lists four of them: the grave, a barren womb, dry land thirsty for water, and fire. Each one has an appetite that’s never truly filled. In Hebrew, "Sheol" (she'ol, שְׁאוֹל) is the word for the grave or the underworld, a place that always "wants" more lives. The barren womb longs for a child, the earth for rain, and fire for fuel—none of them ever say "enough."

What’s counter-cultural here is the honesty about desire. Modern culture often promises that the next achievement or possession will finally satisfy us, but this proverb says some hungers are endless. It’s not just about physical things; it’s about the emotional and spiritual emptiness that can haunt us, too.

If you’ve ever chased something—success, love, approval—only to find it never quite fills the hole, this verse is for you. It’s not saying desire is bad, but that some things can’t be filled by chasing more. Sometimes, the answer isn’t to feed the hunger, but to step back and ask what really matters. Recognizing this can help you break free from cycles that leave you feeling empty, and focus on what actually brings peace.
