What does Proverbs 3:25 mean?

You won’t have to panic when disaster hits, or when trouble comes to everyone around you. Proverbs 3:25 - Modern Text Bible

(Even when chaos or disaster strikes, you can stay calm and unshaken because you’re grounded in wisdom.)

Don’t be afraid of sudden trouble or disasters that shake others. The verse claims that wisdom gives you a kind of calm that isn’t shattered when things go wrong unexpectedly. The Hebrew word for sudden is pithom, meaning something that comes out of nowhere, and the word for ruin is sho’ah, which can mean devastation or collapse.

This pushes back against the idea that fear is inevitable or that you have to live on edge, waiting for the next crisis. In both ancient and modern times, people worry about what might happen—whether it’s war, economic collapse, or personal disaster. The verse says that wisdom makes you resilient, so you don’t have to live in constant fear.

If you’re someone who’s always waiting for the other shoe to drop, this verse offers a different way: build your inner life on wisdom, and you’ll be steadier when the world shakes. It doesn’t mean bad things won’t happen, but you’ll be less rattled and more able to respond well.
