What does Proverbs 27:14 mean?

If you wake up your neighbor early in the morning with loud greetings, it won't feel like a blessing—it'll feel like a curse. Proverbs 27:14 - Modern Text Bible

(Timing matters; even good intentions can be annoying or harmful if they're not considerate.)

Praising someone loudly and at the wrong time can feel more like a curse than a compliment. The Hebrew word for "blesses" is barak, which means to speak well of or wish good for someone. But when it’s done in a way that’s disruptive or insincere—like shouting praise early in the morning—it can be irritating or even harmful.

This verse pushes back against the idea that more enthusiasm is always better. Sometimes, timing and sensitivity matter more than volume or intensity. Over-the-top gestures can come across as fake, annoying, or even embarrassing to the person you’re trying to honor.

If you want to encourage someone, think about what would actually make them feel good—not just what makes you look supportive. Real kindness pays attention to context and the other person’s feelings. Sometimes, a quiet word means more than a loud shout.
