What does Proverbs 25:24 mean?

It's better to live in a corner of your roof than inside a house with a quarrelsome spouse. Proverbs 25:24 - Modern Text Bible

(Living with constant arguments is so unpleasant that even a cramped, uncomfortable space alone is preferable. Peace is more valuable than comfort.)

It's better to live in a corner of the roof than in a spacious house with someone who is always picking fights. The Hebrew phrase for "quarrelsome" is eshet midyanim, literally "a woman of contentions," but the point applies to anyone who stirs up constant arguments. In ancient houses, the roof was an exposed, uncomfortable place—yet that's preferable to a home filled with strife.

This proverb pushes back against the idea that bigger homes or more company automatically mean a better life. Sometimes, peace and quiet are worth more than comfort or status. It also challenges the notion that you have to put up with toxic relationships just because of social expectations.

If you're dealing with constant drama at home or in your closest relationships, this verse gives permission to value your own peace. Sometimes, choosing a little solitude is healthier than living in the middle of endless arguments. You don't have to accept misery just because it's familiar.
