What does Proverbs 24:21 mean?

My child, respect the Lord and the king, and don’t join those who rebel against them. Proverbs 24:21 - Modern Text Bible

(Honor both God and those in authority, and don’t get caught up with people who stir up trouble.)

Showing respect for both the divine and for those in authority is called wise. The verse urges you to honor God and the king (or government), and not to side with people who are quick to rebel or stir up trouble. The Hebrew word for "fear" here is yare (יָרֵא), which means deep respect or awe, not just being scared.

This pushes back against both ancient and modern ideas that rebellion is always heroic. The proverb isn't about blind obedience, but about recognizing the value of order and stability. It warns that joining those who are always looking to overturn things for their own gain can lead to chaos and suffering.

If you're frustrated with authority or tempted to join in when others want to tear things down, this verse asks you to think about the bigger picture. Respect doesn't mean agreeing with everything, but it does mean considering the impact of your actions on the world around you. Sometimes, restraint and thoughtful engagement are more powerful than protest for its own sake.
