What does Proverbs 24:11 mean?

Rescue those being dragged off to death; hold back those stumbling toward slaughter. Proverbs 24:11 - Modern Text Bible

(If you see someone in danger or heading for disaster, do something to help them.)

When you see someone in real danger—headed for death or destruction—you’re supposed to step in and help. This verse makes it clear that ignoring someone else’s crisis isn’t an option. The Hebrew word for rescue here is natzal, meaning to snatch away or deliver from harm. It’s active, not passive. In ancient times, as now, people could be tempted to mind their own business or claim ignorance. This proverb says you have a duty to get involved when someone’s life is on the line.

Today, it’s easy to look away from suffering or convince yourself it’s not your problem. But this verse insists that responsibility doesn’t stop at your own front door. If you see someone in trouble—whether it’s bullying, abuse, or any form of harm—you’re called to act. Doing nothing is a choice, and it matters. Being a good person means stepping in, even when it’s inconvenient or risky.
