What does Proverbs 23:9 mean?

Don’t waste your words on someone who mocks wisdom—they’ll just laugh at what you say. Proverbs 23:9 - Modern Text Bible

(Trying to teach or correct someone who doesn’t care about wisdom is pointless.)

Trying to share wisdom with someone who refuses to listen is pointless—they won't appreciate it, no matter how carefully you explain. The Hebrew word for "fool" is kesil, meaning someone who is stubborn, closed-minded, or set in their ways. The verse says that wisdom is wasted on people who have already decided not to care.

This challenges the idea that you can reason with anyone if you just try hard enough. In a culture that values debate and persuasion, this advice is blunt: some conversations go nowhere, and that's okay. You don't have to keep trying to reach someone who doesn't want to hear it.

If you've ever felt frustrated by someone who ignores good advice or mocks your efforts to help, this verse gives you permission to stop. It's not your job to change everyone. Sometimes, the wisest thing you can do is walk away and save your energy for people who are open to learning.
