What does Proverbs 23:3 mean?
Don’t crave their fancy food, because it might come with strings attached. Proverbs 23:3 - Modern Text Bible
(The warning is that the generosity of influential people can have hidden motives, so don’t get caught up in the luxury.)
Sometimes, the things offered by powerful people aren't as generous as they seem. This verse warns you not to crave the special food set before you by someone with influence, because what they're offering might come with hidden motives. The Hebrew word for "deceptive" is kachash, meaning false, unreliable, or misleading. The point is that not every gift is free—sometimes, it's bait.
This advice is counter to the idea that you should always accept what's given, especially from those above you. In a world that prizes networking and favors, this verse says to be careful: what looks like generosity could be a test, a trap, or a way to get something from you later.
For anyone who's ever felt uneasy about a favor or a gift that seemed too good to be true, this verse gives permission to trust your gut. You don't have to accept every offer, especially when you suspect there's an agenda behind it. Sometimes, the safest and wisest move is to politely say no and keep your independence.
