What does Proverbs 21:7 mean?

Violent people get swept away by their own cruelty, because they refuse to do what’s right. Proverbs 21:7 - Modern Text Bible

(Those who hurt others end up destroyed by their own actions, since they reject justice.)

People who use violence or exploitation to get ahead end up destroyed by their own choices. The Hebrew word for "violence" is shod (שׁוֹד), meaning devastation or ruthless harm. The proverb says that those who refuse to act fairly are setting themselves up for disaster—they’re caught by the very forces they unleashed.

This goes against the idea that the ruthless always win, or that you have to play dirty to succeed. The verse insists that injustice is self-defeating, even if it looks powerful in the short term. Harm done to others comes back around, often in ways no one expects.

If you’ve ever seen someone’s aggressive tactics destroy their relationships, job, or peace of mind, you’ve seen this truth play out. The proverb is a warning that the cost of hurting others is always higher than it seems. It’s a call to build a life on fairness and empathy, knowing that what we do to others shapes what happens to us.
